WCA Varsity Eagles Boys Basketball Continues Metro Roll

Our WCA Eagles Hoops team has now entered the meat of its Metro Conference schedule, and all signs point to the likelihood of another Metro crown for WCA.

With wins over top teams Atlantic Shores and Portsmouth Christian in the ‘W’ column, the Eagles are the only team in Metro with an undefeated record. They would face Isle of Wight Academy, Denbigh Baptist and Portsmouth Christian in their recent Metro action, and were victorious in all three games.

Back Home

The Eagles returned home for the first time for over a month after extended tourney play and road games over the break, and welcomed Division 2 Isle of Wight Academy. The Eagles cruised in this one, and were in control the entire game, coming away with a 75-37 win. Team captain Cle’von Greene led all scorers 25 points, and DaShawn Cook nearly compiled a triple double with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

 Critical Win

WCA bolstered its Conference championship hopes when they captured a key win on the road the very next night versus Portsmouth Christian School. With a win already at home against PCS, the away victory put a major cushion between WCA and the field, as PCS only has the two losses to WCA on their books. In a game that was marked by a wide disparity in foul count, with a foul total of 10-0 at one point in PCS’s favor, WCA fought off several rallies by the Patriots, but pulled away on clutch shooting by sophomore Dexter Radcliffe. Radcliffe scored his 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting, and also tallied 11 rebounds. The Eagles were winners, 85-64, with the score not very reflective of the hard fought battle.

Strong Finish

The team concluded its run against a rebuilding Denbigh Baptist team which is winless this season. With a score of 24-2 at the end of the first quarter, Coach Brown handed the lead of the team over to junior RaShawn Cook, who led all scorers with 21 points. Several reserves saw substantial action, which will be extremely valuable during state tournament time. Sophomore point guard Kivinie Johnson scored 14 points, and seniors Luke Anderson and Danny Kean added 7 in the 71-17 win.

The team had a full week to recover from what has been a harried schedule of games, and they will need it. The Eagles travel to Atlantic Shores Christian School Tuesday night (1-31-17) in a game that might decide the Metro regular season crown and hosts Amelia Academy the following night (against whom they lost earlier this season). They will also travel for a tournament game against one of the best teams in the state, Miller School, on Saturday.

Call to Action

Please come out for our key Division 3 matchup Wednesday at 7PM  as the Eagles face Amelia Academy in a game that may preview a semi-final or even final VISAA State Championship game this season!
