What
I.B.?

Williamsburg Christian Academy is now an International Baccalaureate School offering the full IB Continuum - the Diploma Programme(DP), Middle Years Program (MYP) and Primary Years Program (PYP) - joining over 4,000 schools worldwide. But what does that mean? What is the I.B. program, and what impact will it have on the education of your child?

The International Baccalaureate is an international organization that provides a highly respected educational framework that unifies learning, instruction, and language. Beyond content, learners develop life-long skills across disciplines. As mentioned, IB has been adopted by nearly 4500 member schools in over 150 countries.

Picture your child at age thirty or thirty-five. What would you want the impact of their education to be when they reach that age? Would it be to know the details behind the Treaty of Guadalupe? How to calculate the square root of -17? Or would you want your student(s) to be equipped to think critically, to be able to manage their time to accomplish an objective, be kind to others, and embrace the joy that comes with learning new things? When we talk about education and what it means, what we really want to know is how to instill in our students the knowledge that will make them better learners and better people. How can we be sure that we send them off into life with the skills they actually need to grow and develop in a successful, happy way?

The IB program seeks to foster those characteristics in your student, not only to pave a path for success in whatever endeavor or career they pursue, but to instill upon them the concept of being a world citizen, and contribute to impacting the world in amazing ways.

IB is one educational tool that frames the "HOW" of learning. It does not dictate the "WHAT" of any school’s mission or "WHAT" students should be thinking. As students grow into their walks with the Lord, a deeper academic immersion into our Christ-centered purpose will equip students with additional evangelical tools. After commencement, our students must be influential Christian leaders and builders of HIS kingdom.

When examining the International Baccalaureate learner profile, you will find words such as caring, knowledgeable, reflective, respectful, thinkers, and inquiries. The IB learner platform (that we are applying for), fits seamlessly into the seven pillars of WCA’s academic program:

  • Your Christ-Centered Walk
  • Communication
  • Stewardship
  • Wellness
  • Respect
  • Awareness
  • Innovation through Inquiry

The above seven pillars support WCA’s commitment to academic excellence. Williamsburg Christian Academy’s Christ-Centered mission and academic pillars prepare young people to grow into confident, knowledgeable, respectful, Christ-centered leaders in this world that the Lord has given us.

The Primary Year Programme (PYP) prepares students from grades K-5th to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child, a cornerstone of WCA's educational focus.

A challenging framework that encourages students in grades 6th through 10th to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.

The Diploma Programme is the ultimate college preparatory curricular model. Embarked upon in our students' junior and senior years, research suggests many benefits to choosing the Diploma Programme (DP), not the least of which is higher college acceptance rates. The program aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.

...that research has shown that students who graduate from an IB Diploma Programme are 17% more likely to be accepted to Ivy League universities, and 22% more likely to be accepted by other top-tier schools?    Read the report

WCA is very excited about our recent approval for the IB Continuum. We are sure you have plenty of questions about the program, how it fits into WCA's Christian culture, and what all of that means to you and your student(s)? We have created and are regularly updating a Frequently Asked Questions databank!
