WCA Hoops Continues Undefeated Streak, Logs Three Wins, One in OT

Our Boys Eagle Basketball Team competed in three contests last week, with a 2 game back-to back homestand versus then undefeated Stonebridge and non-conference foe Amelia Academy, and top rival Atlantic Shores Christian last Friday, winning all three games.

The week represented the first major tests for WCA, playing three games inside 4 days, with an undefeated team, a consensus VISAA Division 3 Top Ten team in Amelia and perhaps our top rival, in-conference Atlantic Shores Christian.

Stonebridge came in undefeated on the season, and WCA quickly put that record to the test, jumping out to a quick 44-21 lead in the first half and finishing up with some quality bench play to win 88-62. Captain Xavier Green, already an ODU scholarship commit, scored 19 points and gathered 9 rebounds, while Ryan Flanagan posted 14 points and junior Cle’Von Greene chipped in 13.

The going was far more rough in the second game in back to back nights as WCA faced a likely end of season State playoff team in Amelia Academy. In a thrilling back and forth game with countless lead changes, WCA was able to secure a 3 point lead in the final seconds before Amelia Academy drained a 3 point basket with almost no time remaining to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, however, Xavier Green showed why he was voted 2015 Metro Player of the year, as he scored the majority of the Eagles 12 points in the bonus period to secure a 69-65 victory. Senior Point Guard Andre Brown was also pivotal all game, hitting 4 of 9 from behind the 3 point arc, ending with 18 points.

The final game of the week highlighted what will be most likely Metro’s top two teams as WCA traveled to Atlantic Shores Christian to take on the favored Division 2 Seahawks. With many pointing to this game as the litmus test as to just how good WCA could be, our Eagles responded in glorious fashion, with, as Coach Chris Brown describes, “One of the most perfect nights of executed basketball I have seen or coached”, taking an amazing 96-71 win from the home crowd at Shores. Five players scored in double figures, including Xavier Green, Cle’von Greene and Andre Brown, as well as twin junior slashing guards RaShawn and DaShawn Cook.

Still undefeated at 7-0, WCA has been recognized as the 5th ranked team in the state, and hands down top overall rank in VISAA Division 3 by Maxpreps.com.

The team travels next week to participate in the Atlantic Shores Christmas Tourney on December 22, as well as the Bishop Sullivan Holiday tourney on December 28th and 29th.
