WCA Eagles this Summer: What Our Students Have Been Up To

Our students may be off from school this summer, but they are still doing great things and serving as incredible ambassadors for WCA in summer activities….here’s a glance at what just some of our students have been up to this summer:

Eagle Hoops Visits U of M:

Williamsburg Christian Academy’s Varsity basketball team spent some extra time together this summer, as they headed to the University of Maryland for their Elite Select Camp. Coach Williams goal for the camp was to get his guys some exposure, interact with college coaches, learn what life is like as a college athlete (such as practice twice a day, having early classes, studying, weight conditioning, and meal preparation) and introduce parents to the recruiting process. It was a fantastic team building experience for all who attended!

Mission accomplished!

Coach Williams will also be taking a few select students on a trip to Yale University for another camp in a few weeks.

Watson Attends Leadership Course:

Junior Kailey Watson recently spent two weeks as a member of the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center’s Ministry Leadership Training Program.  According to the WCRC website, the Ministry Leadership Training program focuses intentionally on developing ministry and leadership skills in young people so that they may “be salt and light in a world that is full of darkness.”

The MLT program focuses on developing leadership skills by providing real opportunities to lead in a supervised setting. Participants work through classroom training sessions and discussions with experienced staff and have opportunities to interact with WCRC campers and put their knowledge into practice.

Included in the specific skills that Kailey learned were how to share the Gospel, how to prepare and lead a devotional, conflict resolution, how to handle discipline and more.

“MLT was very beneficial to me because they had several different yet consistent ways in which educated us on the objectives of the course, including group sessions, having people come in and speak, and going and observing the way people in different roles lead,” said Watson about how the course benefited her. “My favorite and most impactful part of the session was planning an event for all of camp and getting to see all of our hard work and planning in action. MLT is a fabulous program for anyone who wants to learn, both hands on and through discussion, about what a leader is and how to be a better a leader in their personal lives.”

Eagle Swim Team Members Make Waves at Virginia State Championships:

Three of our Eagle Swim Team Members, Lainey Flanagan, Kaitlyn Sullivan and Delaney Gibbons, attended Virginia Swimming’s State Championship meets recently. Lainey Flanagan attended Virginia Senior State Champs, while Sullivan and Gibbons attended Virginia Age Group Champs in the 13-14 year old age category.

Sullivan and Gibbons were able to score at their meet, with Gibbons placing 6th in the 100-meter Backstroke and 11th in the 200-meter backstroke, while Sullivan placed 6th in the 50-meter freestyle and 14th in the 100-meter Backstroke. Both qualified for the next higher level of competition, Eastern Zone Championships in Richmond on August 8th-11th.

Senior Jordan Wright Heads to China:

For the past two years, Jordan Wright and her family played host to a Chinese International Program student, Class of 2018 graduate Rence Wu, so this summer they decided to spend some time in her home country of China. Jordan and her family visited Rence’s hometown of Shanghai, and also visited several other sites in and around the city.
