WCA Eagle Swimmers All Score in Saints JV Invitational

Despite a wave of sick days and injuries plaguing the Eagle Swim Team, five surviving swimmers managed to outscore much larger teams, especially in the girl’s group, which almost moved ahead of Norfolk Academy and their 23 swimmer contingent at the St. Christopher and St. Catherine JV Invitational at Kenney Pool in Richmond.

After an unfortunate injury to their only other male swimmer, Aaron Copland was the literal last man standing to battle for WCA for the Eagle Swim Boys. He managed two very strong swims, both personal bests, and scored 20 points with a 10th place finish in the 50 yard Freestyle, and 16th overall in his first attempt at the 50 yard Backstroke this season.

The Girls’ squad, without solid all around contributor Faith Murray and Breaststroke specialist Mary Nice, managed to down two other teams in the meet, despite each of those teams having at least twice as many swimmers, and in the case of one school, over twenty female swimmers. In a meet format that heavily favors larger teams, placing anywhere other than last with just four swimmers was a fairly heady accomplishment, and was only possible since all four scored points in a very crowded and competitive meet.

Kaitlyn Sullivan was once again in the medals, as she raced to 2nd place finishes in both the 200 yard Freestyle and 50 yard Breaststroke. Lainey Flanagan contributed two scoring swims as well with 13th place finishes in both the 50 Free and 50 Back, and 6th grader Heather Chandley also scored with a 16th place in the 50 Back in a 44 swimmer field.

But the story of the meet for the Eagles was 5th grader Delaney Gibbons, who at just 10 years of age finished 10th in both the 100 yard Individual Medley, and the 50 Backstroke.

The Girl’s Medley and Freestyle Teams also collected points with 9th and 11th place finishes in the Freestyle and Medley Relays respectively.

The team concludes its season at the VISAA JV Championship Meet at Seton in Warrenton, VA on January 30th.
