Our WCA Eagle Men’s Basketball Team continues its march towards a state title, posting a three win week that included victories over top tier VISAA Division One program Benedictine, Metro foe Broadwater in the Homecoming slate of games and versus James Monroe High School at a special showcase event at Tucker High in Richmond.
A circled game on the calendar, last Wednesday’s matchup against Benedictine was yet another litmus test game against high quality competition in the State. In an exciting back and forth defensive battle, WCA rallied at the end to pull ahead for good with approximately 1 minute to play despite missing 13 of 24 free throws in a well spread offensive effort. Xavier led all scorers with 13 points and 7 rebounds, and junior Cle’Von Greene chipped in 11.
Two days later would bring Homecoming and the Broadwater Academy Vikings from Exmore, VA. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, with the bench coming in to handle most of the second half, winning with authority 80-38. Xavier Green once again led a balanced scoring attack with 15, Cle’Von Green added 13 and senior Andre Brown chipped in 9.
After a night’s sleep the Eagles were up again for a 3PM contest at a showcase game versus James Monroe High School from Fredericksburg at Tucker High School in Richmond. Xavier Green showed why ODU has already promised a full basketball scholarship to X, as he may have displayed one of his best games in an Eagle uniform, with several crowd pleasing drive and dunks. Green would finish with 23 points on 8 of 9 from the field, with 12 boards and 4 blocks. Cle’Von Green was 5 of 5 on 3 pointers to tally 15 points. Andre Brown added 15 points and Mike Duncan chipped in 9 points and 5 rebounds.
The team now holds a 12-2 record and plays next Monday 1/11 at Isle of Wight Academy.
