Following a six-month national search for an Upper School administrator, Williamsburg Christian will turn to one of its own to assist with the leadership position. Head of School Johnny Graham made the announcement to parents Tuesday morning. “After many conversations with candidates, on-site interviews, interview committee collaborations, and days of prayer,” Graham shared, “I have selected Mrs. Crystal Florakis to serve in the role of Upper School Assistant Principal effective Wednesday, July 1st, 2020.”

Florakis joined the faculty of WCA in 2018. She is currently serving as our Director of Learning Support Services, working with our twice-exceptional and challenged students. She was moved into that broader role after starting at WCA as the Lower School Enrichment Specialist.  Crystal graduated from Old Dominion University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology, with a minor in Special Education. Crystal realized her passion was in special education and began teaching in the public school while she was working on her master’s degree in special education from ODU. She left teaching after a few years to stay home and raise her family. Crystal returned to school recently to finish up her master’s degree at ODU and return to the field that she loves. She lives on a historical farm in Charles City with her husband and five children, three of whom currently attend WCA.

Given her level of presence throughout WCA, her advocacy for students, her devotion to service in ministry, her ability to collaborate with faculty to achieve team goals, and her desire to grow and learn, Mrs. Florakis will fit seamlessly into WCA’s leadership structure.

Mrs. Florakis’ role will involve parental and student communications, student scheduling, lighter levels of our progressive discipline system, student affairs, learning support services for Upper School, and departmental logistics. Graham added in his announcement, “We celebrate all that Mrs. Florakis brings to the role, and we look forward to witnessing God use her to help grow the Upper School. Mrs. Florakis will train for her new position throughout the remainder of this semester.”

Aside from his Head of School duties, Graham will continue to serve as official Upper School Principal, lead the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program International Baccalaureate curricular transitions, and collaborate with the Upper School team to install WCA’s life preparation program.

WCA is currently in its early enrollment period through February 29th. Families who enroll students on or before this date benefit by paying current year’s uninflated tuition rates, and have their new student fee ($300) waived.
