Eagle Swim Team Girls Head to VISAA State Swimming Championship Meet

A state swimming champion in just Eagle Swim‘s third year in existence? Maybe, says Eagle Swim Program Coordinator Jeff Sullivan, who will accompany WCA’s two female qualifying swimmers to the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center in Stafford, VA for the 2018 VISAA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. Sullivan’s daughter, Kaitlyn, was ranked 1st in the state for the first 4 weeks of the swimming season in the 50-yard Freestyle and has been seeded 5th in the event in the Championships that will run two days, February 16th and 17th. The event requires qualifying times to attend and includes all schools from all VISAA school divisions statewide.

Sullivan, a freshman, and teammate Lainey Flanagan, a sophomore, will both swim the frequently wild 50-yard freestyle, with Flanagan in as the 12th seed. The race is often subject to wide fluctuations in finishes due to the very small time spread between top times. The spread between the top time and 16th time in this meet is only 2.05 seconds. So basically, anything can happen on any given day in the 50 Free.

“Both girls are set up to score in the 50 Freestyle,” noted WCA Head Swim Coach Anne Anderson, “but it is the most unpredictable event in swimming. If they swim smart races, though, they will be set up well to make finals in the evening.”

It certainly is not outside the realm of possibility that Sullivan could post a time similar to her season’s best in club swim, 24.25 seconds, and be at the top or within the top three in finals. And don’t count out Flanagan to make the ‘A’ final, a spot reserved for the top 8 time qualifiers from morning prelims. Lainey has taken a mercurial track to the top of the sport, even though she just started competitive training when she was 13.

Each swimmer is permitted to swim two events. Flanagan will also swim in the 100-yard Backstroke as the 16th seed, and Sullivan will finish up in the 100-Yard Breaststroke as the 13th seed. Both have swum races faster than their VISAA Champs meet seed times in club swim meets, however, so both could move up from those positions as well.

Keep an eye on the WCA Facebook and Twitter feeds, as we will be passing along results as we receive them.

Best of luck to our Eagle Swim girls…..SWIM FAST!!
