Boys Eagle Hoops Go 2-2 in Holiday Tourney Games

Our WCA boy’s Basketball team headed into the break undefeated and highly ranked by many sources as not only one of the best teams in VISAA, but in the entire State of Virginia. In two holiday tournaments and a special showcase event held at the Hampton Coliseum, our Eagles had the opportunity to put their skills to the test against some of those teams surrounding them at the top of the rankings for Virginia high school basketball.

The Eagles first test came against Trinity Episcopal, a very strong Division 1 VISAA squad with State Championship aspirations on their level. The Eagles came out loud and strong jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead. Trinity responded, and surged to an 8 point halftime lead. Trinity again used a well designed press breaking attack to push the lead to 13 points before WCA mounted a blazing 17 point comeback to go up by three with 3 minutes to play, sparked by Cle’Vonn Greene’s 27 points, with most of those scored in that second half. After Xavier Green’s 5th foul removed him from the game, however, Trinity used their height advantage to regain the lead and ended WCA’s undefeated streak at 8 games, final score 77-69.

The team regrouped nicely though the following week in the Bishop Sullivan Christmas tourney, winning both of its games to claim the tourney title for their group. The Eagles handled Hampton Roads Academy 73-60, and came back the following day to notch a huge victory over the Virginia Press’s #3 Virginia Pre-season ranked squad, Norfolk Collegiate.

In a tough third game in three days match up at the Hampton Coliseum, WCA managed a second half surge to close a 13 point deficit, but ultimately fell to strong VHSL Bethel High School at the Allen Iverson Showcase.

WCA faces an equally stiff challenge this week, as it battles top tier team Benedictine High School in what lines up to be another unbelievable game at home Wednesday 1/6, before settling into Metro play on Homecoming Night against the Vikings of Broadwater on Friday, 1/8.
