WCA Hosts VISAA Quarterfinal Tourney Game 3/1 @ 7PM

The road to WCA’s first State Championship since the 2011-2012 Season was set when the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) unveiled its playoff brackets for the 2017 Championships, with WCA heading in as a #3 seed.

The team will play a quarterfinal tournament home game on Wednesday, March 1st at 7PM versus either Richmond Christian or Life Christian.

Preview:

Possible quarterfinal opponents:

Life Christian (11-12)

Head to Head: WCA has defeated Life Christian twice this year in head to head competition. In their first match-up, WCA needed a buzzer beater tip-in by Dexter Radcliffe to take the game at home, but later in the season WCA put together a much better effort in a 81-66 win at the Atlantic Shores Christmas Tournament.

Players to watch: LCA is a young team that spreads the ball around to a group of talented players. Freshman Corbin Slayton leads the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game, followed by 6’8″ senior Joe Conerly. Sophomore Joe Adams, standing at 6′ 6″ leads the team in rebounds with 7.3 per game.

Common Opponents:

#5 Christ Chapel (L, 58-53), (W, 61-53), WCA 76 ChristChapel 57
Granby (L, 67-54), Granby 67, WCA 64
Portsmouth Christian (L, 57-49), WCA 79 PCS 58, WCA 85 PCS 64
#1 Amelia Academy (W, 58-52), Amelia 83 WCA 80 (OT), Amelia 69 WCA 66
Steward (W, 61-46), Steward 63 WCA 62
Benedictine (L, 71-49), Benedictine 89 WCA 60.

Summary: Life Christian is a wild card that could just as easily defeat WCA as lose by 40 points. They key for WCA against a team with a large front line will be boxing out and working hard for rebounds.

Richmond Christian (17-8)

Head to Head: WCA has not faced Richmond Christian in the last three years.

Players to watch: Roster Unavailable

Common Opponents:

#5 Christ Chapel (L, 73-40), WCA 76 ChristChapel 57
#1 Amelia Academy (L, 86-56), (L, 63-54), (L, 80-53),  Amelia 83 WCA 80 (OT), Amelia 69 WCA 66

Summary: Richmond Christian’s impressive win loss record has come primarily against weaker opponents. When facing the teeth of Division 3, they have been beaten badly. It is hard to imagine Life Christian not defeating Richmond Christian based on performances against similar opponents.

Please come out and support the Basketball team Wednesday night as it faces one of these two teams to advance to the State Semi-finals Friday at 1:45PM at Virginia State University!
