Eagle Soccer Varsity Boys Stun Patriots With Three Goal Comeback Win

A mystery. That was probably the best description anyone could come up with as to how effective this year’s WCA Eagle Soccer Varsity Boys team would be this season. With only a few full-time soccer players on the squad, the result is generally a team that works hard but cannot compete with teams with a half dozen or more experienced soccer players. But the intangible for WCA is the raw athletic ability and speed of many of WCA’s senior players, many of whom are playing soccer this year from WCA’s Division 3 Championship Basketball team last season.

The mystery was in part unclouded Tuesday afternoon, however, as the Eagles rallied from a 3-1 deficit to roar back and defeat the Portsmouth Christian Patriots 4-3 at home in their season opener.

WCA went down 1 to 0 after the 15th minute, but subsequently tied it up in the 25th minute on a Peter Rodenberg curler into the lower right corner of their goal from 8 yards out in their box. The Eagles again went down 2 to 1 on a WCA handball foul in the goal box and a converted penalty kick. Early in the second, the team went down 3 to 1 on a breakaway goal by Portsmouth, and it seemed the skill and experience of the Patriots would win out. Not so fast.

WCA started its comeback with a seeing-eye shot from Landis Buckley that bounced off a defender and went into the upper right corner just out of the reach of the Portsmouth goalie.  With 15 minutes remaining, a header by Cle’von Greene found the net when both he and the goalie went up for a contested ball, tying the contest. And with just a few minutes remaining, a quick counter started by RaShawn Cook gave the ball to Jalen Vaughan on the left wing just inside the box. Vaughan calmly sidestepped an oncoming defender and slotted the ball past the goalie for the winning goal, sealing the win in the waning minutes of the game!
The Eagles will attempt to move to 2-0 as they play host to the Stonebridge Cavaliers today at WCA. We had a great crowd Tuesday and are hoping to build on that with an even larger crowd today, Thursday, September 7th. The game starts at a working-parent-friendly 4:30PM. Come on out and watch this exciting team attempt to assert themselves as a force to be reckoned within the Metro Conference!
